The Evolution and Historical Context of Artificial Intelligence Part 2

Early Foundations of Artificial Intelligence
Early foundations of artificial intelligence go back to ancient philosophy and early computing. Around 400 BCE, philosophers explored logic (in general) and imagined machines (automatons) that could mimic human behavior. In the early 20th Century, the development of computing began to turn these ideas into scientific and technical possibilities.

Formal Birth of Artificial Intelligence

The formal birth of artificial intelligence established it as a field of study. In 1956, the Dartmouth Conference introduced the term “artificial intelligence” and defined its goals. Early researchers focused on creating machines that could think, learn, and solve problems like humans.

Artificial Intelligence's Early Growth

Artificial intelligence had early growth, innovation, and challenges. From the 1950s to the 1970s, tools such as LISP (programming language) and early neural networks were developed, along with systems capable of specialized reasoning tasks. Government funding was strong, and global interest allowed for rapid progress and experimentation. By the late 20th century (1970s-1990s), progress slowed because expectations were not being met. Although some work continued in algorithms and machine learning, a lack of funding led to a downturn, which became known as the “AI Winter”.

Modern Artificial Intelligence's Impact
Modern artificial intelligence has accelerated rapidly and impacts daily life. Advances in computing power, the availability of large-scale data (through telecommunications and computing technologies), and algorithms have driven many breakthroughs in areas such as deep learning and natural language processing. AI is now integrated into daily life through generative AI (text, images, code, music, and video), automation, virtual assistants, and more. Ongoing AI development raises important considerations about ethics, jobs, and the long-term role of AI in society.
