Evolution and Historical Context Overview
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing project management, but it is unlikely to replace
project managers entirely. Instead, it is able to handle many of the repetitive, time
consuming tasks that project managers were earlier responsible for, leaving more time for
PM’s to focus on larger problems at hand. As Steven Delgrosso explains,” AI can assist
with scheduling, reporting, and tracking, allowing project managers to spend more time on
higher-level responsibilities like strategy, stakeholder communication, and decision-
making” (Lasson, 2026). This shift highlights how AI is not eliminating the profession, but
elevating it. In fact, Delgrosso notes that “rather than shrinking the profession, AI is
changing it, pushing project managers into more influential, higher-value roles” (Lasson,
2026).
History of the Relationship Between AI and Project Management
(1950’s and 60’s) The relationship between AI and project management has developed
over several decades. The early days of project management date all the way back to the
1950s and 1960s with the introduction of tools like the Critical Path Method (CPM) and
Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). These methods allowed managers to
use mathematical models to improve scheduling and efficiency, although they still
required significant human interpretation and oversight (Battula, n.d.).
Early Beginnings (1970-2000)
As technology improved, project management started using less and less
manual processes and began to shift towards computerized systems to handle many of
the day to day tasks such as budgeting, scheduling and resource allocation. “Project
management software began to emerge, making it easier to organize tasks, allocate
resources, and track progress. However, these systems were still largely passive tools—
they depended heavily on human input and did not actively analyze or predict outcomes”
(Battula, n.d.).

Internet and Technology Revolution(2000-2020)
In the early 2000’s project management technology took another huge step,
which is that systems had evolved into far more advanced platforms with broadened
abilities, allowing PM’s to use a single system for multiple uses such as budgeting,
scheduling and communication. “These platforms integrated multiple project functions,
such as data collection, reporting, and communication, into a single system. This allowed
for better coordination and more informed decision-making, but AI capabilities were still
limited” (Battula, n.d.).
Modern Use of AI (2020 - current day)
In today’s day and age, Ai has become one of the most impactful tools
across all lines of work, but specifically in project management. Unlike earlier
technologies, modern AI systems can analyze large datasets, identify patterns, and make
predictions with minimal human intervention. According to Battula, “this represents a
major turning point: AI is no longer just supporting calculations but is now contributing to
analysis, forecasting, and decision-making processes that were once exclusively human
responsibilities” (Battula, n.d.).
